Customs

Appenzell is renowned for its vibrant traditions and customs. Whether its handicraft treasures or musical highlights, traditions here are not only preserved but actively lived and woven into everyday life.

The Alp rides in the Alpstein, the Landsgemeinde in Appenzell, the annual Bloch or dozens of cattle shows illustrate a rich cultural heritage that is cultivated with passion and proudly presented to interested visitors by the Appenzell farming community.

In no other region of Switzerland are tradition and customs lived as intensively as in Appenzell. Dressed in a wreath skirt with cameo jewellery and a Milanese scarf, people go to the ‘Stobete’, a dance with string music. From mid-May, herdsmen in their traditional costumes take the animals up to the alp.
