About us

Behind the Bären is a family in which everyone puts their heart and energy into their work - each in their own unique way.

Carmen is the soul of the house. With her experience in the catering trade, a great deal of passion and a keen sense for people, she has fulfilled her heart's desire with the guesthouse. She cooks, bakes, listens, organises - and wholeheartedly ensures that everyone feels welcome.

Her husband Matthias usually works in the background, quietly, reliably and with an eye for the essentials. As a trained electrician and all-rounder, he ensures that everything runs smoothly at the Bären: from the light bulbs to the roof tiles.

Eldest daughter Stefanie brings warmth to the day with her open, sunny nature. She is particularly in her element at breakfast - with a smile and a freshly brewed cup of coffee or tea for the guests.

Vanessa, the youngest, conjures up sweet moments in the house. With great attention to detail, she bakes delicious treats for the breakfast table or a cosy afternoon coffee. During the holidays, she often takes over - and brings a breath of fresh air into the house.

Together we are the Löpfe family - there for you with heart, dedication and joy. We look forward to welcoming you to the Bären.

History

In 1973, Vreni and Heinz Willi took over the Bären in the 4th generation. After some urgent, gentle renovations, the almost hundred-year-old Appenzeller restaurant shone in new splendour and was reopened as a restaurant.

In the very small kitchen, Vreni conjured up freshly prepared dishes with great passion and creativity. In the cosy ‘Chäshütte’, guests mainly enjoyed fondue, raclette and other cheese dishes.

In the very quiet garden away from the noise and stress, many guests lingered over food and drink and this is still very much appreciated, often in deckchairs.

The four children spent a very varied life in and around the house, as there were still old barns and plenty of space to play and often enough work to help out. Heinz made fresh cheese every day in the new cheese dairy next door and also helped out at the Bären in the evenings.

After 36 years, Vreni and Heinz closed the restaurant and converted the business into a guest house. The new guest house opened in spring 2010 with nine beautifully furnished guest rooms.

After a total of 51 years, Vreni and Heinz have now handed the Bären over to new hands. On 1 April 2025, Carmen Löpfe took over the Bijou with just as much passion. With fresh ideas and an equally big heart for hospitality, the Bären will continue in its proven quality - and perhaps even set a few new accents.
